Our monthly period can tell us many things if we know how to listen. Menstruation is a beautiful gift of nature. Each month they are giving us important information about how things were working (or not) for our bodies? If we have a headache or an upset stomach, it’s our bodies way of letting us know something isn’t right, so why would it be any different with menstrual health?

Changes in the skin, spot outbreaks, cramping, mood fluctuations all help to tell us if what we are eating is working well for us. Lifestyle choices, such as getting enough rest and exercising are also apparent through looking at changes in the menstrual cycle. High-stress levels can impact heavily on our hormones and cause irregular cycles.

Our emotions and belief patterning can also have an impact on your monthly bleeds. We can hold so much trauma and grief within our womb space. How we really feel about our self and our body image can also have an impact on our well-being. When we honour ourselves, love ourselves, and allow our emotions to be processed, we enjoy healthier menstrual cycles. When we hold negative beliefs about our menstrual cycles and ourselves as women, various menstrual problems may manifest. There is a powerful connection between the body, mind and spirit.

What Is A Normal Blood Flow?

The colour and consistency of your monthly bleed can reveal way more about your overall health than you realise. A normal healthy cycle should consist of red blood with little clots. Brown blood is referred to as “old blood” because it lacks oxygenation. It can be normal to start and end your menstrual flow with a little brown blood, though it is a sign of stagnation to see brown blood throughout your flow.

Brown blood at the beginning is last months old lining. Brown blood at the end is months and months old lining.

Clotted Flow – Lots of blood clots in one’s menstrual flow can mean that there is blood stagnation. To rectify this, make changes in your diet or take supplements that will naturally help thin the blood. Omega-3 fatty acids in salmon or fish oils are good for blood thinning. Our cycle is also sensitive to stress and we can often become out of balance emotionally. Look at ways in which to reduce stress and what you can do to get the energy, qi, life force going again.

Light Flow – could be due to lack of sleep, more nutrition, excessive stress or other physical things going on in your life. Change this be addressing your lifestyle choices and eating a well-balanced healthy diet. Blood building foods such as iron-rich vegetables, like leafy greens, and protein-rich foods such as organic meat 

Heavy Flow – can indicate there is too much heat (excessive Qi) in the body. It can also be caused by fibroids or polyps. Heavy blood flow could also be caused by deep-seated emotional issues, abuse, physically or mentally.
